Patrick Wolf - Time Of My Life (Single Review)

Patrick Wolf thinks he’d be at number one if he was a woman, but at the young age of 28 he’s already set to release his 5th album - so there’s still time to grab that chart position. Wolf is able to combine his effeminate, romantic folk elements with his eccentric, sexy electro pop to create ‘Time Of My Life’, the single to introduce the album.

ImageHaving already had his previous two singles A listed on the Radio 2 playlist, Patrick Wolf has proven that he can entertain and entice an array of different audiences, but with a fear of being too conventional – there’s no denying he can be pretty unpredictable.

‘Time Of My Life’ begins with powerful, sweeping strings and as Patrick begins to sing the first few lines, it is evident that his voice has matured since early songs of the ‘Lycanthropy’ album. The various songs written about personal experiences throughout his albums show that Patrick Wolf has been able to convey so much of his life through his music, and that certainly continues with this single.

‘Time Of My Life’ began in 2006, when Patrick started writing it at the end of a relationship, and was completed 3 years later during a temporary break up in his current relationship. To be able to link the two experiences shows how each is relevant to the other, but also that no matter what age or gender someone is, the pain of a break up can feel the same!

Patrick Wolf has said that he doesn’t worry about making an album ‘too straight or too gay’, and despite the Euro pop elements of ‘Time Of My Life’, it is obvious that the words he sings are relevant to everyone who listens.

Patrick Wolf has managed to create great depth with his arrangement of so many different sounds and ideas intertwined through this song, and he really has managed to perfectly combine his multitude of different influences to create a song which will undoubtedly appeal to such a wide audience.
