Soul singer Adele was heckled and booed at during her performance in London’s Hammersmith Apollo, after she announced dates to an arena tour she has scheduled for next year.
The ‘Someone Like You’ singer had previously told fans she’d stick to small venues after she didn’t think she’d be able to handle big crowds like the arena shows would attract, but at her London gig she revealed that she’d be appearing at larger-scale concerts next year.
“Too many people want to see my shows,” Adele claimed to the crowd. “This is the last time you'll catch me at a venue like this. These will be my last theatre dates as I'm moving on to arenas. I'll be at the O2 in February.”
The speech was met with disapproving boos as the fans feel their favourite singer has let them down by moving on to bigger and better venues, leaving the intimateness of smaller shows out. It comes just four months after she told fans they were “out of their mind” if they thought she was going to play arena-sized shows in the future:
“You think I'm gonna play a fucking arena? Are you out of your mind?' I'd rather play 12 years at the Barfly than one night at the O2! The thought of an audience that big frightens the life out of me. I don't think the music would work either. It's all too slow”.
