Noah and the Whale have taken their listeners on a whirlwind of emotions throughout all of their albums, bursting with happiness, misery and sorrow. Their ability to enrapture their listeners without fail in each and every song is the reason for their huge success in the music industry, with their new album being no exception as it rides high as one of the best selling albums of the year.
Noah and the Whale’s new single ‘Waiting for My Chance to Come’- from their album ‘Last night on Earth’- will be released on October 24th and is followed by the band’s biggest headline tour to date. ‘Waiting for My Chance to Come’ is the perfect song for this indie band to finally express their optimism to the world, following an album (The First Days of Spring) that makes the listener want to break down in a flood of tears after realizing life isn’t worth living without the one you love. Listening to this song for the first time is like entering a new era; we can see the journey they’re taking as we follow them through their voyage of life. Their optimism seeps through immediately with the high, fast strums of the ukulele and we can see that Noah and the Whale have returned to their old selves, with a little more maturity and experience.
After a short ukulele intro, the drum beat starts to kick in, encouraging you to sway along as the violin starts up and Charlie Fink’s voice eases in at a mere 15 seconds. In the next verse, the light finger picking of the guitar gives the song a happy-go-lucky feel, almost giving a vibe reminiscent of The Beatles' song 'Here Comes The Sun'. This song is best described as an uplifting one with well grounded optimism. With its typical build-up to a powerful chorus, it definitely reminds you of the Noah and the Whale we used to see back in ’06.
Noah and the Whale’s new song is a light hearted and happy tune appealing to a wider audience with their optimistic message. It’s the perfect song to give the listener a taste of what’s to come in the rest of the album- some breathe a sigh of relief as they realize they will no longer be exposed to the miserable side of Noah and the Whale, whereas others tut in despair as they feel the new song lacks the beauty and emotion that filled the previous album. However, not one person can argue that Noah and the Whale have created some beautiful music in the past, and after taking a listen to their new single, it is clear this song is no exception and we eagerly await the many more that are to come.
