Up and coming indie band Theme Park have set the blog world ablaze with their debut ‘A Mountain We Love/Wax’ which is being released on 31st August 2011. Though they are something of a typical indie band, they are more talented musicians than most. Their music is relaxing and easy to listen to, with their song ‘Wax’ being a great example; it’s a nice peaceful melody to have in the background- no effort involved, no having to force yourself to listen before you can appreciate its beauty- it’s all there with the first listen. The video for this song also adds a nice touch, subtly introducing us to the band members without the typical scene of them playing in an underground car park. The unique use of photos gives a comfortable, almost nostalgic feel, reflecting the atmosphere of the song perfectly.
As for song itself it has a very calming tune, with the lead singer’s voice cropping in effortlessly and soothing our ears when accompanied by the soft melody of the bass and rhythmic beat of the drum. All these collectively give the song a tranquil feel, and when the chorus commences, accompanied by the light echo of the other band members, we can see this whole piece coming together in a soft and inviting manner that intrigues the first listener.
‘A Mountain We Love’ may be a little harder to listen to for the average person, with its lack of soft build-up to a chorus that barely sounds any different to the verse. The intro, a little too repetitive and a little too reminiscent of Talking Heads, yet once the bass is introduced the song dramatically improves. The band has a lot of talent, especially in their bass player, Louis Bhose, who gives their songs that little edge that sets them apart from all those other aspiring indie acts. The refreshing guitar riffs coupled with the inviting voice of Miles Haughton give each of their songs an uplifting feel that meshes well with current trends in the music industry.
Both songs have great potential, following their single ‘Milk’ which gave the band a huge boost in the music world. However, they’re still in their early stages, looking fresh out of student life and understandably awkward in some of their performances, it is clear that they still have a long way to go. However, one should not judge merely by their youth or obvious connection to Talking Heads. This band have a touch of uniqueness to them, and with their huge talent and a brilliant debut, it’s undeniable that their popularity is destined to increase.
