Lady Gaga's Fans Way More 'Devoted' Than Adele's, Says Utah Saints' Tim Garbutt

Adele has had a phenomenal 2011/12, with her winning big at the Grammy Awards and the BRITs, breaking a number of chart records, and her album ’21’ becoming the highest-selling album of the year (by some distance). But one thing the star is lacking, according to Utah Saints star Tim Garbutt, is a seriously devoted fan-base – like that of Lady Gaga’s.
Garbutt thinks that while Adele has ‘done amazingly,’ her fans are nowhere near as devoted as Lady Gaga’s – and, in his opinion, that makes her the biggest artist on the planet.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Garbutt said: “Music isn't so closely linked to fashion as it used to be. You used to be able to tell by the way someone was dressed what type of music they were into. It was identifiable as a fashion trend and a culturally underground/overground kind of thing.
“Nowadays something can be underground and literally two weeks later it can be in the charts. Witness the rise of Skrillex or deadmau5 or Nero. It's great, but it's no longer the coherent force that it used to be.
“The days of it being unifying are over for a bit. But it's interesting that the person with the biggest fanbase, the biggest artist on the planet, is Lady GaGa. She's got her monsters. She's managed to bring it all together. For an artist to do that now is tricky. I'm not taking anything away from Adele for example, she's done amazingly, but she's not got what Lady GaGa's got - these passionate fans.”
He added: “Or even Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran's got his passionate fans. That doesn't happen very often. It certainly doesn't happen with a genre of music.”
