Codex Leicester - A Mad Man's Lullaby (EP Review)

Codex Leicester are a four-piece based in, well, Leicester named after the famous Da Vinci scientific journal. This EP is, incredibly aptly, entitled 'A Mad Man’s Lullaby'. Aural examination of the six songs contained here affirms that Codex Leicester are, most probably, complete nutcases. Whether they sing each other to sleep to the tune of second track 'Hey Hey Hot Legs' is yet to be confirmed at the time of publication.

What makes this band worth listening to? That very insanity of course. What else is more genuinely satisfying than music that sounds like it has gone clubbing twenty minutes after a coronary bypass? 'A Mad Man’s Lullaby' is a skulking threatening little beast, turning this way and that with a primal savagery that seems inappropriate for four such ordinary looking guys. The guitars are tuned to maximum aggression and the vocals are pitched to, bizarrely catchy, yelps. Highlights are non-existent, this EP demands to be listened to in its all too short entirety.

You should probably get on board with Codex Leicester. If they are anywhere near as mad as this EP suggests, they will probably come round your house and smear your kitchen sink with play dough if you do not. You have been warned.

'A Mad Man’s Lullaby' is out now via Function Records.
