They’re mistakes. Calling your childhood friend Joss Stone - by mistake - is not a mistake. Because without it, we wouldn’t have the absolute joy that is 'Desperation State', the debut album from Yes Sir Boss. Within minutes of dialing, Joss had asked Yes Sir Boss to support her on tour in Amsterdam, and then signed them up to her label ‘Stone’d.’
'Desperation State' is a truly electrifying album, it experiments with different sounds and themes, it’s like the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby if it was directed by Bazz Lurhman and Quentin Tarantino, set in the Wild West. With trumpets. And if all that sounds a bit mental, then you don’t have a good enough imagination.
The title track 'Desperation State' is a fantastic opening, a bluesy, indie, four-and-a-half minute beauty of a song, and is followed by The Situation, a haunting and cinematic Kill Bill-esque instrumental that leads into the jazzy, reggae-infused 'Not Guilty'. The band use a variety of different instruments including melodicas, trumpets, guitars, glockenspiels…they whistle, they stomp, they rock. Singer Matt Sellors’ voice is rich and classic, and never overshadows the glorious instrumentals going on behind it; his voice is an accompanying instrument. Then comes 'Pretty Thing' which slightly strays into Kooks territory, which panicked me a bit – but the album is swiftly redeemed by 'Never Know', a fast paced little tune that gets slower, and slower, before catapulting you back into the fray.
'Desperation State' is a real mix of sounds and genres, it’s tight, it’s rousing. It’s exciting. And after you buy the album, remember to thank Joss Stone. You never thought you’d be doing that this year, did you?
