Darwin Deez - Oran Mor, Glasgow - 16th February 2013 (Live Review)

All right folks, grab your thick rimmed glasses, drink a foreign beer that nobody has ever heard of, slip on your hemp loafers and climb aboard your fixed wheel bike because Hipster-hero(es) Darwin Deez are/is in town. And I'm not just being indecisive, Darwin Deez is the name for the band/guy/both/run away before your brain melts... Their show comes off the back of the second album released 11th February and the date was near the start of a tour stretching over a whole lotta spring, and the Atlantic.
Pondering going to a one of the tour dates? Ah you'll probably want to know what the gig was like then I guess. In a word, fun. Deez go all out on the silly. Darwin took to the stage wearing a skirt and every few songs you are treated to a 'masterfully' choreographed boy band dance performed with impressively straight faces. This is all done without too much pretentiousness and, despite mutterings of critics, I think that Deez are managing to tread a fine path, avoiding the trap of "we ALL play synth" indie-rock-electro-crap bands for people with glazed over expressions and no souls. Instead they make music that's catchy and kooky though not to the sometimes wretch inducing levels of Belle and Sebastian.
But, and here's the surprise, they can also rock out pretty well. Live, they played 'Free' on steroids; faster, meatier and with an extended outro, and Deez managed to slot a couple of cheeky Hendrix-y solos into the rest of their set too. That, and the hundred person "OOOOH" in 'Bad Day', made for a cracking night, still a couple more songs with a bit more pace and an audience which wasn't 50% kids too cool for school (or art college) to actually show they were enjoying it wouldn't have gone amiss.
Ah well, I'll just drown my sorrows in some nice Fµntwong premium beer.
Missed them on tour? Darwin Deez will tour the UK again in April and May.
