Swim Deep - Where The Heaven Are We (Album Review)

Birmingham has produced some of the most iconic bands in the history of popular music, yet from the outside it seems that the second city has faded into the background in recent years. That is starting to change again, and a steady stream of like-minded indie bands have begun to appear from a fertile scene.
The movement includes bands like Peace and Jaws, and now you can add Swim Deep to the growing list - they’re a guitar band whose members are all set to become the poster boys of this musical regeneration.
Describing their sound as ‘beach grunge’, the band, who have already given us great singles in Honey and She Changes The Weather, have further treats in store with their debut full-length album ‘Where The Heaven Are We’.
Swim Deep's inspirations are writ large across their sound and, refreshingly, they’re not really shy about it. There’s more than a dash of the Stone Roses in there, and a pinch of the Smiths. It would appear that they are unashamedly dusting off the sounds of the ‘80s and ‘90s and polishing them up for a modern audience.
She Changes The Weather is a psych-pop number doused with piano, one that spares no expense with creativity and represents the term ‘bittersweet’ faultlessly. Equally, tracks like King City have all the qualities of summer anthems.
Large portions of the record demand singalongs and the emptying of the bar onto the dancefloor, and each song on 'Where The Heaven Are We' could quite comfortably be released as a single in its own right. That's a hallmark of a great pop record.
