It’s been a while since Chris Conley and Saves The Day sounded this vibrant. Maybe it’s the cover, in all its grapefruity glory, or maybe it’s the fact that the conceptual strings that bound ‘Sound The Alarm’, ‘Under The Boards’ and ‘Daybreak’ have been cut.
After setting aside that huge undertaking, Saves The Day turned to crowd funding to make this record, with a back-to-basics sound perhaps not their initial intention, but certainly the result. The vast majority of the songs here are clipped, hooky and everything that you want from Saves The Day. No, it’s not ‘Through Being Cool’. But what is?
There are several noticeable mis-steps - Beyond All Of Time is largely horrible, Supernova is a sub-Freakish plod - but in a broad sense Conley has put together a collection of songs that hit all the spots required from a great Saves The Day record.
Remember and In The In Between are superb openers, boasting clever melodies and Conley’s sweet, reflective lyrics, while Ain’t No Kind Of Love and Xenophobic Blind Left Hook possess chunky power chords and interesting, tricky time signatures respectively. Everything is carried off with a healthy dose of fuzz and choruses that just don’t stop.
Saves The Day have proven in recent years that they’re not afraid to test themselves creatively, which makes this return to their roots all the more refreshing.
