Kids In Glass Houses - Peace (Album Review)

Friday, 27 September 2013 Written by Katie Vowles

‘Peace’ might just be the biggest statement in Kids In Glass Houses’ career to date. The quintet have built strong foundations over the last seven years and in that time they’ve turned in three full-lengths and a batch of well-received singles.

Their debut, ‘Smart Casual’, was the pop-rock record of the moment. Its follow-up, ‘DIRT’, stepped up the pop but also showcased Kids In Glass Houses’ experimental side, while ‘In Gold Blood’ really branched out, keeping the pop backbone but alienating some fans with electronic touches and a dark outlook.

Having dipped their toes in the ever-expanding waters of fan-funding site PledgeMusic, ‘Peace’ is perhaps Kids In Glass Houses’ most overtly pop record yet and is packed full of potential singles and unavoidably catchy hits.

From Aled Phillips’ distinctive croon to the witty lyrics (“If all men are created equal/Then who are all these V. I. People?” – VIP) Kids In Glass Houses are a pop band through and through. Phillips brings such character to the vocal lines here, while the instrumentation is bang on every time. They never miss a chance for a sweet harmony.

‘Peace’ is unavoidably vibrant and the words leap out of the speakers with an upbeat outlook and insanely catchy hooks. The title track, and first single from the album, is perhaps the most infectious song here. Gang vocals reinforce the verse and roar out in the chorus. Once again it has its foundations in rock, but some welcome synth touches keep it fresh.

As well as Phillips’ rocky vocals, his effortless falsetto plays a big part in the pop hooks on ‘Peace’. That is particularly true on Drive, an electro track with yet another massive chorus.

Kids In Glass Houses have had their fun experimenting, but now they’re back doing what they do best – producing huge tracks that get people excited. ‘Peace’ is the perfect album for pop lovers. Just sit back and let it improve your life.
