The time is now for Fenech-Soler. They’ve been knocking around for a while, with their profile slowly on the rise since the release of their self-titled debut three years ago. Likened to Friendly Fires and Delphic by the Guardian earlier this year, they’re packing that upbeat, electropop kind of sound that you know and love.
The opening track on ‘Rituals’, Youth, acts as a fine hook at the top of the album, while All I Know, one of the singles on display, is a good, punchy pop song with a ferocious chorus. Likewise, In Our Blood follows a pretty bankable recipe for a great song with a good melody and a nice, slightly syncopated drum beat.
Ritual I holds a beautiful, graceful opening and serves as a lead in track to Last Forever, which is let down by a garish chorus that doesn’t live up to the expectations set by its opening act.
Elsewhere, Somebody has a house feel to it which works well, while Maiyu - despite a coherent, typical structure - continues the house theme in its chorus.
Fading and album closer Glow are other major highlights, and the former boasts a chord sequence that’s just lovely.
‘Rituals’ is a refreshing dose of credible song writing that comes across as chilled out while also seriously whetting the appetite to catch the band live. In a genre that's reaching saturation point, Fenech-Soler have proved that they have what it takes to survive.
