It can be hard to get excited about new music when a lot of it has already been done to death. AlunaGeorge, then, are a welcome surprise.
This London duo have gone from the ranks of the unknown to Glastonbury slots and major radio airplay in the space of 18 months, and it’s easy to see why. Yes, they’re another electro-pop group. But they’re a very, very good one.
Aluna Francis’ distinctive vocals combine beautifully with George Reid’s sophisticated production, while their sound has crucially retained an edge despite their rise up the ladder.
‘Body Music’ has been eagerly anticipated among their rapidly-growing fanbase, with their huge collaboration with Disclosure, White Noise, whetting appetites further. The album opens with Outlines, where serene production and soft vocals ease the record into its groove early on, although the slow and steady pace doesn’t last long.
You Know You Like It, one of the album’s singles, is a banger. The bass is dangerously addictive, with the lyric “you know you like it, but it drives you insane” particularly apt.
Attracting Flies, another of the record’s singles, is an equally phenomenal track, with the cutie-pie opening riff smashed by the drums and bassline, and Your Drums, Your Love is just a beautiful song. Again it’s rather addictive, so take precautions when listening.
AlunaGeorge are young and have a massive future ahead of them. If ‘Body Music’ is anything to go by, their journey is one worth tagging along for.
