Worriers - Cruel Optimist (Album Review)

Friday, 01 November 2013 Written by Huw Baines

“What doesn’t kill you just makes you a mess, but no-one ever wants to tell you that,” muses Lauren Denitzio on the title track of Worriers’ new 12”, a collection of reflective, smart and ferociously catchy punk songs.

Since leaving the Measure [sa], a band that isn’t mourned nearly enough, Denitzio has continued to experiment as a graphic artist, including a residency in Iceland and forthcoming stopover in Berlin, while building Worriers into a new musical outlet.

On ‘Cruel Optimist’ the songs are backed up by guitarist Rachel Rubino, of the frequently excellent, often-overlooked Bridge And Tunnel, bassist Tim Burke and pop-punk warrior Mikey Erg, but this is Denitzio’s show.

The pace varies from the contemplative - the alt-country of Precarity Rules - to breakneck - on The Only Claude That Matters - but throughout there are perceptive lyrics and left-field melodies that will invite themselves into your life, pull up a chair and settle in.

Denitzio reviews political development on Never Were, weighing up the fundamentals of belief against growing older and more experienced, references literature on Cruel Optimist and Passion, art on The Only Claude That Matters and eloquently weaves feminist theory with human experience.

It’s been a couple of years since ‘Past Lives’ introduced Worriers, but ‘Cruel Optimist’ will soon be followed by a European tour 7” - ‘Sinead O’Rebellion’ on Yo-Yo Records. If there’s another wait around the corner, then at least there's plenty to keep us going.
