Following strong reviews of her debut album, ‘Strangers Who Knew Each Other’s Names’, and this year’s ‘East Twenties’ EP, UK-based New Yorker Annie Dressner has returned with a new single to brighten up those long winter nights.
Having performed at Green Man, Cambridge Folk Festival and Secret Garden Party, supported the likes of Fossil Collective and Emily Barker and earned radio play from Steve Lamacq and Tom Ravenscroft, among others, there’s no question her star is on the rise.
Dressner’s music is very difficult to dislike, but the challenge for her is to take that extra step. Don’t Feel The Same follows a similar template to her previous work, with her delicate voice floating above a gentle, bouncing drum line.
The difference here is a chorus that leans closer to pop than we’ve heard before, which provides extra life to the track and a lovely, breezy quality. Lyrically, while not Dressner’s strongest work, it is typically autobiographical, again showcasing her ability to write in a manner that makes you feel she’s whispering secrets into your ear.
There is a well-maintained balance between bright, sunny instrumentation and the song’s theme - losing love too soon. It initially strikes at something pleasant before taking a turn for something quite a bit darker.
As with Dressner's previous releases there’s plenty to like here, but it remains to be seen if Don't Feel The Same is the track that lays the groundwork for a larger following.
