When delivering his best of 2013 list to Punknews, Paint It Black’s Dan Yemin wasn’t afraid to talk up his adopted hometown. He said, simply: “Philadelphia owned this year. So proud. But please don't move here from Brooklyn and drive the rents up.”
He was, in fact, talking about Radiator Hospital’s excellent ‘Something Wild’ LP, but lurking in the background the whole time were a band capable of releasing its equivalent for this year. Cayetana, you see, have the potential to be very good indeed.
The ‘Hot Dad Calendar’ 7” follows up their well-received demo, which surfaced last year on Ifyoumakeit, and acts as their Tiny Engines debut and a forerunner for their first full-length.
The title track is a rough diamond; a short burst of slacker pop wrapped up in Augusta Koch’s endearingly earnest, soulful vocals and a sort of world-weary optimism: “Kid you’ll be ok, you’ll get better with age.”
Backed by Ella, a demo track that’s been given a new lick of paint, Hot Dad Calendar suggests that Cayetana will soon follow Radiator Hospital, Chumped and Swearin’ in making an alt-punk record to savour.
