Fire At Derby's Assembly Rooms Causes Sarah Millican Show Postponements

Monday, 17 March 2014 Written by Elliott Batte

A fire at the multi-storey car park that serves the Derby Assembly Rooms has caused the cancellation of events over the next seven days.

The blaze, which occurred on Friday night, is reported to have started accidentally. The incident was tackled by firefighters and emergency services, and didn't reach the venue itself, though some motorists’ cars were not so fortunate.

However, it has resulted in a number of events - including comedienne Sarah Millican’s three scheduled sold out performances - which were due to take place this week - being postponed to a later date, as bosses work out a plan for resuming normal service.

The fire has left extensive damage to the top levels of the car park. You can see for yourself on the BBC’s video here.

A statement on the venue’s website states: “Due to the major incident that took place at the Assembly Rooms site on Friday 14 March, we regret to announce that a further week of shows at the Assembly Rooms will be cancelled, up to and including Monday 24 March, whilst clean up operations get underway.”
