If you are of the opinion that you can never have too many alternatives to laddy, lager-soaked indie, then Teleman, like Alt-J and Grizzly Bear before them, might be just the ticket for you.
Formed by three former members of Pete and the Pirates, Teleman’s sound is highly mannered, recalling classic pop as much as their contemporaries.
Synth-based and carried aloft by Thomas Sanders’ high-pitched vocals, there are neatly sculpted melodies across ‘Breakfast’, along with some decidedly English, Divine Comedy come ons. “She makes me to lie down,” runs the hook on Cristina.
In truth, there’s something wholly endearing about the precision with which Teleman have tackled this record. It’s one that benefits from care and attention, its layered hooks alternately given space to breathe or padded with psychedelic swirls worthy of Jeff Lynne.
The only thing that holds it back is the quality of its best songs. Cristina is certainly one of them, while you will truly struggle to find a better four minutes of pop music than 23 Floors Up this year. Next to that song’s internal conflict, which is wrapped in a plaintive chorus melody to die for, good songs like In Your Fur and Lady Low are left scrabbling to make up ground.
Only on the overlong Travel Song, which is perhaps fitting, do Teleman really drop the ball. ‘Breakfast’ is a good album, and an excellent debut, but there’s more to come.
