Every Time I Die - From Parts Unknown (Album Review)

Tuesday, 01 July 2014 Written by Huw Baines

A Warrior Splash just won’t cut it. ‘From Parts Unknown’, Every Time I Die’s seventh album, kicks like a Hogan big boot.

This record rages with the same fire that made ‘Ex Lives’ such a compelling beast, with Keith Buckley dragging things up from the very depths of his soul - whether that’s self-acceptance, the ability to deal with setbacks or deep rooted fears - as fuel for a vocal performance that never slips below ferocious.

The light is there at the end of the tunnel, though, and Buckley’s honesty is invigorating. Ryan Leger’s performance behind the kit is equally arresting, his lightning fills and rapid beats underpinning many diversions into straight-up hardcore. Pelican Of The Desert and If There Is Room To Move, Things Move are nothing short of devastating.

With the riffs still intact, this record’s other trump card belongs to producer Kurt Ballou. The Converge guitarist has presided over some of the best sounding hardcore records - his own band’s ‘All We Love We Leave Behind’ included - of recent times, and here his precise, powerful style works perfectly.

A couple of memorable melodies also filter through - see Old Light and Decayin’ With The Boys - but, for better or worse, ‘From Parts Unknown’ has only one speed: straight ahead, as fast as possible. Every Time I Die have always had style and this is, largely, a record of substance.
