Thursday, 17 July 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Blues legend Johnny Winter has died aged 70.

The guitarist, brother of Edgar Winter, rose to fame in the late ‘60s and was known as a fine slide player, later producing notable albums by Muddy Waters.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, a representative said:

“Texas blues icon Johnny Winter has passed away on July 16, 2014 in his hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland. His wife, family and bandmates are all saddened by the loss of their loved one and one of the world's finest guitarists.”

Winter had been due to release a new album, ‘Step Back’, in September. The record features contributions from Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Dr. John, Leslie West, Brian Setzer and Joe Bonnamassa.
