The Cribs - For All My Sisters (Album Review)

Tuesday, 24 March 2015 Written by Laura Johnson

The Cribs, having drawn a line under their 10 year anniversary with ‘Payola’ a couple of years ago, are back. ‘For All My Sisters’ is the trio’s debut for a new label and is, in line with one of their more prominent base desires, unashamedly pop.

The Jarman brothers have not lost their knack for infectiously catchy indie anthems and Burning For No One, the lead single from album six, harks back to the good old days of Hey Scenesters!. But, where previous releases took turns into laid back territory and meandered, ‘For All My Sisters’ is completely focused and features barely a note that has not been considered and developed.

Written by Ryan Jarman around the time of ‘In the Belly of the Brazen Bull’, Mr Wrong picks up where that album left off, but bridges some musical gaps to sound fuller, layered with different ideas and more impressive as a result.

While the album is impressive as a whole, though, some of its composite parts let it down. Simple Story is just that, too basic. Monotonous and failing to build to anything, it does a disservice to a beautiful, insightful entry on the lyric sheet. Does the instrumentation take a back seat intentionally? Maybe.

Pink Snow, too, is a disappointing closer. Far too long, the song has a great Britpop riff, but that isn’t nearly enough to carry it. Though it contains the title lyric - “For all my sisters, I promise you this, that I’ll try to be brave for you” - it is by no means a highlight. Instead of going out with a proverbial bang it’s a murmur, which is a shame, as this is an otherwise triumphant return for the Wakefield siblings.

The Cribs Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Thu March 26 2015 - KINGSTON Hippodrome
Thu May 21 2015 - BELFAST Limelight 2
Sat May 23 2015 - NORWICH Waterfront Norwich
