‘Right On!’ is the solo debut from Warpaint bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg and, although it features soundscapes that could form part of her day job, it falls some way short of being cut from the same cloth. At best it might patch the Warpaint-shaped hole that’s grown since they released their self-titled sophomore LP nearly two years ago.
Blind is an extremely strange start to proceedings and not the statement of intent that many would expect. Unfortunately, it does succeed in mapping out the shape of things to come. More than one of the tracks that follow crib from the same downbeat, though admittedly atmospheric at times, droning formula.
The bassline of Boom Boom, the should-have-been-opener, raises hopes that Blind was just a blip, but that soon fades as the repetition returns and you quickly realise the song peaked with its intro. Despite that, it’s still one of the standout tracks here.
No amount of handclaps can save the cringe-inducing He Fresh, though the beautiful melodies of Never go a long way in compensating for it. Long Lonely Winter is home to the most considered lyrics on the LP, but that’s not to say they are particularly sophisticated.
Riot offers up wonderfully layered atmospherics, but they’re soon forgotten as Offerings starts pumping. The song is completely out of place here and leaves questions as to whether its inclusion is the result of a cutting room floor mishap.
White Devil is probably the only track on ‘Right On!’ that really gets the blood pumping and where the circular motifs don’t grate. It helps that drummer Kris Byerly briefly varies the record’s dynamic and injects a well needed dose of vigour with his “white devil” screams.
Sadly for Jennylee the album sounds like the undeveloped ideas of someone with great potential but a lack of patience. If words were removed and Lindberg’s voice was used purely as an instrument, as it is around the two minute mark in Never, ‘Right On!’ would be better for it. Instead, we are treated to a seemingly meaningless tirade of basic lyrics that are recited over and over.
On and off stage Lindberg often appears energetic and outgoing, so expectations were there for an album brimming with erratic twists and turns. Even with the obvious intention for there to be a “jam session” vibe to the LP, it only underwhelms and rarely rises above being a suitable comedown soundtrack for a Glastonbury-goer.
