Chuck Berry's 'Chuck' Set For Summer Release, First Single Big Boys Shared

Wednesday, 22 March 2017 Written by Laura Johnson

Chuck Berry's new album will be released this summer.

'Chuck', his first new album since 1979’s ‘Rock It', will arrive on June 16 via Dualtone/Decca Records. The rock 'n' roll pioneer, who passed away on March 18, recorded and produced the record in studios around St. Louis, where he was joined by his children Charles Berry Jr. (guitar) and Ingrid Berry (harmonica, vocals).

The album also features Jimmy Marsala, who was Berry’s bassist for 40 years, Robert Lohr on piano and drummer Keith Robinson, who supported him for close to twenty years and two hundred residency shows at the Blueberry Hill club. The record also boasts guest performances from Gary Clark Jr., Tom Morello, Nathaniel Rateliff and Berry's’s grandson Charles Berry III.

In a statement released earlier this week, Berry's family said:

"Working to prepare the release of this record in recent months and in fact over the last several years brought Chuck a great sense of joy and satisfaction. While our hearts are very heavy at this time, we know that Chuck had no greater wish than to see this album released to the world, and we know of no better way to celebrate and remember his 90 years of life than through his music."

Charles Berry Jr. added:

“Working on my Dad's record has been one of the best experiences of my life. I will forever treasure the musical conversations we had, and the time we spent together completing it.”
