The nominees have been announced for the 2018 Welsh Music Prize.
The gong will be handed out at Cardiff’s Coal Exchange on November 7, with former winners Gwenno and Gruff Rhys among the nominees. The former makes the list with her Cornish-language synth-pop odyssey 'Le Kov', while the latter is in the running for his fifth solo LP ‘Babelsberg’.
Also in it to win it are Manic Street Preachers and Boy Azooga, for ‘Resistance is Futile’ and ‘1,2, Kung Fu’ respectively, while nominations also go to Alex Dingley’s ‘Beat the Babble’, Astroid Boys’ ‘Broke’, Bryde’s ‘Like an Island’, Eugene Capper & Rhodri Brooks’ ‘Pontvane’, ‘SOAR’ by Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, MELLT’s ‘Mae’n Hawdd Pan Ti’n Ifanc’, ‘Trunks’ by Seazoo, and Toby Hay’s ‘The Longest Day’.
Huw Stephens, co-founder of the award alongside John Rostron, said:
"It’s another eclectic and electrifying nominations list that the jurors have put forward. The judges will now listen to the twelve excellent albums and decide on a winner. These albums have found audiences worldwide, the musicians are incredible talented ambassadors for Wales and this year’s Welsh Music Prize proves that creativity in music from Wales is at an all time high.”
