Model Village is the fourth single to stem from the Bristol post-punks' upcoming third album, 'Ultra Mono', due out on September 25 via Partisan Records. The follow-up to 2018's 'Joy As An Act Of Resistance' also includes the previousy shared cuts A Hymn, Grounds and Mr. Motivator.
The track plays out over a driving guitar riff and pummeling drums as the band serve up a scathing swipe at the close-minded small-town fishbowl mentality plaguing Britain. Elaborating on its meaning, vocalist Joe Talbot said:
"I hated growing up in a city that was really a town that was really a fishbowl. I left as soon as I could, only to realize the fishbowl didn't exist...just the fish, and they're everywhere."
Head below to check out its accompanying animated video directed by Michel Gondry and Olivier Gondry in collaboration with WePresent, WeTransfer's editorial platform. Talbot added:
“Michel’s work is handmade and it's human and that's something that our society pushes against: you need to be perfect. You need to look perfect and everything needs to be seamless and strong. But actually, vulnerability and naivety are strengths. To be vulnerable and to be naive is to have empathy. And so, to empathize with your adversaries and allow yourself to be naked on film or on record is a really strong thing to do. It liberates you and it also liberates your audience. That's something that I hope that IDLES can do, and that Gondry's been doing for years.”
It arrives ahead of three livestream "Lock-In Sessions" from the band at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London on August 29 and 30. Remaining tickets for the virtual shows are on sale now.
Talbot recently featured on the title track of the Streets' new mixtape 'None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive'.
