The Rolling Stones have dropped a remix of their previously unreleased track, Scarlet.
The long-lost gem was unveiled in July and features Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and Blind Faith’s Rick Gerch. The rework by the War On Drugs, meanwhile, is a more psychedelic groove with the addition of some new instrumentation and an uptempo beat which kicks into double-time during the chorus. Group leader Adam Granduciel said:
"I just reimagined the song as if I had Mick, Keith and Jimmy in the room with me. After messing with my Linn Drum for a bit, the song fell into this double time thing and I just went with it.
"I called my friend and bandmate, Dave Hartley, to fill out the bass on the new groove. Then I figured if I had Jimmy Page in the room I'd probably ask him to plug into my favorite rack flanger so that’s what I did. My friend Anthony LaMarca added some last minute percussion.
"I'm so honored to have gotten to work on this especially since Angie (the lead single and US No.1 from Goats Head Soup) was probably the first rock song that I asked to be played on repeat when I was really young. Hope you enjoy it!"
Scarlet, originally recorded by the band in 1974, will feature as one of three unreleased songs on the rock legends' upcoming deluxe and box set edition of 1973's ‘Goats Head Soup’, set to arrive on September 4.
The Rolling Stones dropped their first new song in eight years, Living In A Ghost Town, in April. They also revealed details of a new concert film, Steel Wheels Live, out alongside an accompanying live record on September 25.
The ongoing concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic caused the four-piece to postpone the summer North American run of their No Filter Tour. Rescheduled dates are still to be announced.
Scarlet (The War On Drugs Remix) marks the first new material from War On Drugs in a while. Earlier this year, Granduciel posted to Instagram Live some new songs that he had been working on for the follow up to 2017's 'A Deeper Understanding'.
