Elvis Costello has revealed details of his new album.
'Hey Clockface' came together through sessions in Helsinki, Paris and New York, with mixing handled by Sebastian Krys in Los Angeles. Eetü Seppälä produced in Finland, François Delabrière in France and Michael Leonhart in collaboration with guitarists Bill Frisell and Nels Cline in the US.
The record arrives on October 30 via Concord Records and will feature his longtime bandmate Steve Nieve, as well as Frisell, Nels and Cline, Mickaél Gasche, Pierre-François "Titi" Dufour, and more.
It'll contain the previously released cuts Hetty O'Hara Confidential and No Flag alongside the nelwy shared We Are All Cowards Now, the third and final song from 'The Helsinki Sound' segment of the LP. The haunting track builds on a menacing piano melody and comes with an animated video by Eamon Singer and Arlo McFurlow.
Costello said of the album:
"I sang live on the studio floor, directing from the vocal booth. We cut nine songs in two days. We spoke very little. Almost everything the musicians played was a spontaneous response to the song I was singing. I’d had a dream of recording in Paris like this, one day."
"I wanted to write “Helsinki-Paris-???” on the record jacket like this was a perfume or an advertising agency," he continued. ""London" was a possibility for the third city but London is forever. We’ll be there again. Michael sent this music to me from New York at the perfect time. It connected to elements in both of the previous sessions and completed the picture."
Costello released his last album 'Look Now' in 2018, followed by the 'Purse' EP in 2019. Back in March, he postponed his spring UK tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rescheduled dates are still to be confirmed.
