The Smashing Pumpkins Announce 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' 25th Anniversary Plans

Friday, 23 October 2020 Written by Laura Johnson

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced how they plan to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their renowned album 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'.

In a ten-minute YouTube video posted on the eve of its original release date, frontman Billy Corgan confirmed that the band are working on a 33-song sequel to the 1995 album and 2000's 'Machine'. He was emphatic it was a follow-up to both, as they were both written from a conceptual base and the new record would be the third in a trilogy that revolved around a single character.

During the video, he made reference to the sequel as an "opus" and "rock opera", and confirmed that they already had all of the tracks and he was currently working in the studio on the drums with Jimmy Chamberlin.

For the 25th anniversary of the album, the band were also hoping to announce that they were going to do a 'Mellon Collie...' themed tour, but due to COVID-19 that is not possible. However, Corgan did confirm that is still something they are going to do when restrictions are lifted and it will be a full-scale production with a narrative arc.

As if that wasn't enough, he went on to confirm that after many years and "legal squabbles" the band are in the process of mixing the final 'Machina' project, that will total around 50 tracks. They are also working on volume three in the 'Shiny and Oh So Bright' series, which should feature around 10 songs and follow up their new double album, 'CYR', due for release on November 27.
