Do The Television marks the former Scissor Sisters frontman's first track of 2021, following up his 2020 single Meltdown.
The synthy, disco-ready banger came from an idea the vocalist had when penning Scissor Sisters' 2010 third album, 'Night Work'. While reflecting on the record's 10th anniversary, he was inspired to rewrite the single from scratch with inspiration "by both mid-era Bowie and Lionel Richie." Shears revealed:
"Its flavor is representative of this new batch of songs I've been writing. One of my favorite things about Do The Television is its progression from feeling chilly and removed to warmth and abandon – ending in a very different place than where it starts. It’s about language and the loss of meaning, changing symbols, forgotten history and following the loudest voice in the room."
The singer is currently working on the follow-up to his 2018 self-titled debut solo album. He also recently reunited with Boys Noize on his own single, All I Want.
