Ed Sheeran has shared a new song, Celestial.
The track arrives in collaboration with Pokémon and was written for a pair of upcoming video games, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, which will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch on November 18.
Spirited and somewhat danceable, it comes with a video featuring the singer-songwriter going about his everyday life, with characters from the world of Pokémon appearing as sketches in a style similar to how Sheeran doodled Pokémon as a child. He said:
"I’ve played Pokémon since I was in primary school. Me and my brother used to have different versions of the games and would trade Pokémon together ‘til we each completed our Pokédex. I loved the cards but the games are what I lost myself in. I loved the whole world they created; it kept me distracted if there was negative stuff happening in my life/school that I wanted to avoid. It was a world I could escape into and I’ve played it ever since. Even though I'm 31 now, I still own the same Game Boy Color and play Pokémon Yellow or Silver on planes and trains when I'm on tour. It’s such an honour to add a song into a Pokémon game and shoot a nostalgic video too. I hope you guys enjoy the song and video - it was a blast to film!"
In a comment accompanying the YouTube clip, Sheeran told fans, "Play the games to find the song and if you name any of your Pokémon after me, let me know."
The 31-year-old will resume his The + - = ÷ x Tour (aka The Mathematics Tour) with a run of Australian and New Zealand dates in February and March. Prior to that, he'll play an intimate charity show at London's Union Chapel on November 11.
He released his latest album, '=', in October 2021.
