Metallica have announced the M72 World Tour.
The trek will see them play two shows in every venue, with the second night featuring a completely different setlist and supporting line-up to the one before it, as well as a new in-the-round stage design.
The thrash metal legends will kick off the first European leg on April 27, 2023 in Amsterdam and conclude it in Gothenburg on June 18, 2023. They'll then embark on the first North American leg on August 4, which will run until November 12, when it will wrap up at Detroit's Ford Field.
Further European dates are set for May, June and July 2024, and more North American shows, plus Mexico City concerts, are lined up for August and September 2024.
Support on select dates will come from Architects, Mammoth WVH, Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, Volbeat, Greta Van Fleet and Pantera. Check out the poster below to see who's playing where.
Two-day tickets go on general sale on December 2, at 9am local time for Europe and 10am local time for North America. Day tickets will be available starting January 20.
The band, who will also headline the UK's Download Festival in June 2023, have confirmed a new album alongside the new tour dates. The follow-up to 2016's 'Hardwired... to Self-Destruct 'is called '72 Seasons' and will be released on April 14. Discussing its title, lead vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield said:
“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
As a preview, listen to the record's relentless first single, Lux Æterna, below, where you can also take a look at the album's artwork and tracklist.
Last year saw the release of 'The Metallica Blacklist', which boasts contributions from some of the biggest names in music, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Metallica's classic self-titled album, also known as 'The Black Album'.
