Sufjan Stevens Announces New Album 'Javelin', Shares First Single So You Are Tired

Monday, 14 August 2023 Written by Jon Stickler

Sufjan Stevens has announced a new album.

'Javelin' will arrive on October 6 via his own label Asthmatic Kitty, marking the American singer-songwriter's first full-length release of original songs since 2020's 'The Ascension'.

He recorded the LP at his home studio with a small cast of collaborators, including background singers Adrienne Maree Brown, Hannah Cohen, Pauline Delassus, Megan Lui and Nedelle Torrisi, along with The National's Bryce Dessner, who contributes acoustic and electric guitar on the track Shit Talk.

The LP comprises nine self-penned original compositions and a cover of Neil Young's Thereʼs A World. Head below to hear the record's delicate, stripped-back first single, So You Are Tired, which begins as an atmospheric piano ballad before building to a rich climax rife with guest singers contributing choral-style vocals.

Physical formats of the LP will also include a 48-page book featuring artwork by Stevens and 10 short essays giving insights into the songs.

The news follows the release of Stevens' ballet score 'Reflections' in May, and the vinyl reissue of his 2003 LP 'Michigan' in June.

'Javelin' tracklist:

1. Goodbye Evergreen
2. A Running Start
3. Will Anybody Ever Love Me?
4. Everything That Rises
5. Genuflecting Ghost
6. My Red Little Fox
7. So You Are Tired
8. Javelin (To Have And To Hold)
9. Shit Talk
10. Thereʼs A World
