Red Wing boots, whiskey sour cocktails, and the cowboy-core resurgence: it’s never been cooler to be country. And even if he spends a lot of his time collecting cliches like Pacman gobbles up dots, ‘F-1 Trillion’ finds Post Malone doing what the genre’s legends have been doing for decades: outrunning the ghosts of their past and having the time of their lives doing it.
Whereas last year’s ‘Austin’, a pop-rock confessional void of substance, swam in the shallow end, ‘F-1 Trillion’ sees Posty pulling up buckets of vulnerability from a deep well, disguising his hurt as country-pop love letters.
The Tim McGraw-featuring opener Wrong Ones skips over his poppier missteps with the twangy swagger of dirt road country and once Morgan Wallen hops on top of the truck for the summer-stealing showstopper I Had Some Help, you’ll be doubling down on denim and tipping your Stetson in no time.
‘F-1 Trillion’ plays like a who’s who of country music across the years. There are bucket list duets with Dolly Parton (Have The Heart) and Blake Shelton (Pour Me A Drink) here, alongside country-adjacent bangers with Ernest (Devil I’ve Been) and Hardy (Hide My Gun).
But one thing’s clear: all these guests play a role in legitimising Post Malone’s latest moves, but none of them are needed. Surprisingly, it’s the solo tracks that sound best. What Don’t Belong To Me’s soaring front-porch Americana suggests ‘F-1 Trillion’ is a subtle way of saying goodbye to a past version of himself in favour of a future with his fiance and young family.
Album closer Yours has mascara tears streaming down your face as he shares his eternal love for his daughter, while shooting from the George Strait playbook, album highlight Right About You is a neo-traditional honky-tonk ditty that sings to the power of finding the right one. “I wrote songs about sinnin’, evil women, pills and cars,” Posty sings. “I wrote songs about drinkin’ until you came in and raised the bar, but who am I to write rock bottom from the highs you took me to, thank god I was right about you.”
Whereas ‘Austin’ felt like running a marathon in a mud bath at 17 tracks, the 18 here mostly fly by, leaving memorable melodies nesting in your head. Sure, the Chris Stapleton-starring California Sober tries too hard, and Missin’ You Like That, with Luke Combs, is too much all-you-can-eat country for this buffet, you still won’t switch it off. ‘F-1 Trillion’ isn’t genre-defining, but it’s not trying to be. It’s just Post Malone making the music he loves, and that’s enough.
