Billy Corgan has announced a run of orchestral shows in Chicago for the fall.
The singer and guitarist will celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Smashing Pumpkins' third studio album, 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness', in his hometown, with the Lyric Opera Of Chicago hosting seven special performances between November 21 and 30.
Each concert will reimagine the 1995 record, which features the classic tracks Tonight, Tonight, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, and 1979, with an orchestral arrangement by Corgan and James Lowe. Tickets go on general sale on April 11. Corgan said:
"It is thrilling to collaborate with Lyric head John Mangum, my musical partner James Lowe, and all of the artists at Lyric in reimagining this very special and historic album, and to discover how Lyric’s full operatic treatment is helping me experience my own compositions in powerful new ways. Opera and rock both tell stories of heightened emotions, and I am excited for both fans of my music and traditional opera fans to hear some truly inspired work; for the balance here is to honor both traditions in a magisterial way."
Ahead of the anniversary shows, The Smashing Pumpkins will embark on the summer European leg of The Aghori Tour, which includes outdoor concerts in London, Halifax, Scarborough and Colchester between August 10 and 14. Supporting in London and Colchester will be Skunk Anansie and White Lies, with White Lies only supporting in Halifax and Scarborough. Tickets are on sale now.
The band are touring in support of their latest album, 'Aghori Mhori Mei', released in 2024. Corgan, meanwhile, put out his third solo album, 'Cotillions', in 2019, under his full name, William Patrick Corgan.
