Icon is an overused term, but when you’re talking about Bob Mould it fits. Having made some of the most ambitious hardcore records in history with Hüsker Dü before reinventing power-pop with Sugar in the ‘90s, he has inspired everyone from Metallica to Green Day.

His 15th solo album ‘Here We Go Crazy’ doesn’t do anything particularly new, but its blend of buzzsaw guitars and rich hooks does show that the 64-year-old hasn’t rusted one bit.

Harking back to Sugar’s ‘Copper Blue’, the title track is punchy and anthemic, its bright chorus begging to be belted out at full volume, while Neanderthal and Fur Mink Augurs carry a harder edge that show Mould can still throw down like he did 40 years ago.

“Most of the day, I rifle through my notebook / page after page, filled with scribbles and rhymes,” he admits on Breathing Room, and his penchant for note-taking and constant analysis comes through clearly.

Trauma, politics and relationships are all part of the fabric of ‘Here We Go Crazy’, wedded to the sweetness of By Your Side and the rousing Thread So Thin. But it’s the mournful When Your Heart is Broken that stands head and shoulders above the rest. “I’m so tired, I barely make it to my bedroom / Now I stay inside, these empty moments fill my head with grief,” Mould laments.

‘Here We Go Crazy’ is a rock solid entry into a sprawling discography and, while it may not set the world ablaze, it is another reminder of the ongoing brilliance of one of the great American songwriters.
