It’s been a decade since Banks arrived with ‘Goddess’ and in the years since, the Angeleno songwriter has reinvented herself over and over again, constantly shifting with the tides of time and taste. So it is once again with ‘Off With Her Head’, an album all about bypassing thought and going with your heart.
As a result, it feels free. There’s no overwrought corridor that the music is channeled through, nor is there any flowery prose. Instead, we get raw emotion, sass, sensuality and sophistication.
Guillotine opens by offering a snapshot into the album’s wider chaos, capping a lo-fi, breathy body with a brash, saturated blast of horns that is as jarring as it is compelling.
The Doechii-featuring I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend carries on in that vein with industrial stabs and destructive bass, while the duo hiss: “Wrap a bow around your coffin like it’s Christmas / You a sick ho, you should make a death wish / Scarlet letter then I seal it with a French kiss.”
Delulu is an intoxicating number that showcases Banks’ voice at its expansive best, while Stay marries contemplative piano with hushed apologies to create something devastatingly intimate. Meddle In The Mold is an orchestral juggernaut that smartly uses vocal runs and a blossoming drum line.
The features elevate their respective tracks, with Sampha (Make It Up) and Yseult (Move) both dispatching spectacular work that Banks meets at every turn, but it’s the electrifying River and closing, ballad-esque title track that cements ‘Off With Her Head’ as her best work to date.
