Red Hot Chili Peppers Plan 10th Studio Album For 2010

Red Hot Chili Peppers to return in 2010

Three years have passed since Californian rockers The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their last studio album, the 2006, Rick Rubin produced, two-disc “Stadium Arcadium”. It has been announced that after a two-year hiatus the band are now hoping to be back in the second half of 2010 with what will be their tenth studio album.

The Chilis drummer, Chad Smith, while speaking to Clash Magazine revealed that, “We’re gonna write for a while, it usually takes us a while”. Before speculating that a follow up to ‘Stadium Arcadium’ could surface in October 2010, “sometime next year, maybe this time (next year).”

While it has been two years since the band announced an indefinite hiatus due to exhaustion, it’s not like The Chilis haven’t been busy. Lead singer Anthony Keidis became a father. And a Vegan! Bassist Flea, enrolled into a Music Theory class at University of Southern California and started work on a solo album. Guitarist John Frusciante dropped his tenth studio release and drummer Chad Smith joined forces with Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar to from supergroup ‘ChickenFoot’. Seems as if the Chili Peppers exhaustion has worn off, the next step would be to end this indefinite hiatus.

Speaking to Billboard about his time-out, Chad Smith indicated the end of the recovery period saying, “Y’know I really like having this time off, not being a Chili Pepper and doing other things. It’ll be two years in September so now we’re ready. You can’t force people to play when they don’t want to play or aren’t ready to play or whatever – not in our band anyway.” Smith also mentioned that the band plans to head back into the Studio this October to “do a lot of improvising and jamming” and didn’t shy away from the idea of having Rubin, who has his name on the five previous Chili Peppers album sleeves, back as producer. Although very early for details, he said “he always ends up being the guy. But we haven’t discussed it”.

Fans might be aware that during the band’s break, Chilis bass player Flea has played live as part of Radiohead singer Thom Yorke’s solo band. When asked whether any Radiohead influence might be heard on the new material, Smith said that the bassist had indeed given him a disc of electronic beats as inspiration but that there wasn’t any obvious electronic direction to the new material. He said “You never know. We’ve got songs with piano on them right now, so who knows.”

So far, in return, there have been no reports of Radiohead’s exploration into funk metal and inappropriate sock wearing!
