Mark Thompson, the Director General of the BBC, has confirmed the possible closure of radio stations 6 Music and Asian Network. Thompson spoke to BBC employees, informing them of details for the corporation’s strategic review.
The Director General added that teen programmes such as Blast! and BBC Switch should be closed, and that half of all pages on the BBC’s award winning website should be cut by 2013.
But fans are shocked and angered by the BBC’s plan to close 6 Music. Social Networks such as Facebook and Twitter have been awash with posts and discussions, with hash-tag #Save6music sitting at the top of Twitter’s worldwide trending topics and a Facebook Group topping 85,000 members.
The excellent station is the BBC’s fastest growing digital station, with 700,000 listeners and a bounty of great DJs – Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Jarvis Cocker to name a few!
The strategic review has been submitted to the BBC Trust, where the members of which will make a final decision after a period of public consultation. So if you don’t want to see 6 Music close email your concerns to trust.enquiries@bbc.co.uk AND sign the online petition here.
