Ticket Fraudsters Target UK Festival & Gig Goers

Domain registrar dotster.com is allegedly hosting a fresh batch of ticket scam websites – targeting this year’s UK festivals & popular gigs – despite being told to remove such sites in June last year.

According to the Daily Mirror, dotster.com was found to be the source of several similar domain names offering fraudulent tickets to UK festivals last year.

In June 2009 Scotland Yard detectives ordered the US company behind doster.com to remove 50 suspected fraudulent ticket sites.

Domain names like readingfestival2009.com and leedsfestival2009.com scammed hundreds of festival goers and were still up three months after dotster was asked to remove them.

Similar sounding websites for this year’s festivals (leedsfestivaltickets2010.com, readingfestivaltickets2010.com, v-festival-tickets.net, hydeparkconcerts.com, kingsofleonconcerts.com and paulmccartneylive.net) have now appeared, despite warnings from Scotland Yard’s e-crime unit.

Dotster is one of top 20 largest domain registrars in the world and strongly denies the accusations.

According to the Office of Fair Trading, one in twelve ticket buyers have been caught out by scam ticket websites, with the average victim losing £80 each time.
