The legendary guitar icon Jimi Hendrix will be the subject of a special exhibition in London later this year.
Never a man to put down any roots, Jimi Hendrix was constantly on the road. Finding a home-from-home in London, the then-unknown guitarist arrived in the city during the summer of 1966, creating a spiritual home in amongst the emerging counter culture scene.
Jimi Hendrix encountered an amazing rise to fame whilst re-inventing himself in London. Living in the property located at 23 Brook Street, the guitar legend was able to retreat to this flat and escape all of his everyday troubles.
As a complete coincidence, the building also gave residence to the legendary composer Handel during his days spent in London. With the building currently being used as a museum to the composer’s life, 23 Brook Street will open its doors to fans later this year for a special Hendrix exhibition.
The new exhibition is set to open on August 25th coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s death. In the past the flat has been opened for one off tours but this time around the property will be filled with rare Hendrix memorabilia and belongings.
Included in this treasure trove of music history will be handwritten Hendrix lyrics, the guitarist’s trademark jacket and Westerner hat, photographs and much more. More details are to be released closer to the time of the opening of the exhibition but there is no doubt this will give fans a rare insight into the life of Jimi Hendrix.
Sarah Bardwell, Director of Handel House Museum, had this to say about the forthcoming exhibition. "We are excited to be celebrating the life of Jimi Hendrix. After moving to Brook Street in 1968, Hendrix learned of the Handel connection with the building and headed to One Stop Records in South Molton Street and HMV in Oxford Street to pick up whichever records of Handel music he could find".
"Clearly he was intrigued by the connection and we’re pleased to be celebrating his own legacy today. We are delighted to be opening up the flat which was a true home base to Hendrix during his seemingly endless schedule of touring in the UK and elsewhere."
The ‘Hendrix In Britain’ exhibition will run between August 25th and November 7th.
