Gobby pop princess Lily Allen has walked away with three awards at this year’s Ivor Novello ceremony. And no, she didn’t steal them.
The awards ceremony, which was founded to honour songwriting, has grown in both popularity and glamour over the last few years. Not really running to any agenda or procedure, the ceremony often features appearances from big names as well as the latest unknown talents.
On her home turf, with the awards night being held in London, Lily Allen swanned off with three awards at the ceremony that took place on Thursday 20th May. In collaboration with her producer Greg Kurstin, the singer won the gong for ‘Most Performed Musical Work’ as well as ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ for her huge hit ‘The Fear’, while her album ‘Its Not Me Its You’ also triumphed.
The awards come along just as Lily Allen plans to retire from British music, heading into a career focusing more on acting and business. The star still has some unfinished business with her music however, as she recently confirmed a special show at this summer’s Big Chill festival.
Other award winners at the Ivor Novello ceremony included Bat For Lashes who won ‘Best Contemporary Song’ for their track ‘Daniel’ which features on their recent album ‘Two Suns’.
Scottish songwriter Paulo Nutini scooped one award, while guitarist Johnny Marr was awarded the ‘Ivors Inspiration’ trophy. The former Smiths man commented on his award saying, "I always thought the greatest thing you can be called as a musician is to be called an inspiration. Apart from the big house in Sunningdale, of course! I do believe that rock music and pop music is an art form. It's all about inspiration."
Other artists triumphant at the ceremony included Imogen Heap for ‘International Achievement’ and producer Trevor Horn who was given the ‘Outstanding Contribution to British Music’ award.
