A mixture of rock veterans, fresh-faced indie-kids and fringey emo’s gathered outside BBC headquarters last Saturday 22nd May, in support of BBC 6 Music.
A peaceful demonstration took place outside Broadcasting House where hundreds of protesters joined alongside comedian Ed Byrne and singer Cerys Matthews. The not-so-angry mob listened to live music and messages of support from stars of the music world including Damon Albarn and Lemmy.
DJ Steve Lamacq, speaking about the support for the station, told the Independent on Sunday, "The listenership could not have done more to save the station. Now it is up to the BBC. The rise in listener numbers is impressive – but not surprising because we have been getting better and better for the last eight years. Right now, 6 Music is at the top of its game."
Earlier this year the station was marked for closure in order for the BBC to cut running costs. However, since the proposal to shut-down the station, hundreds of thousands of music fans, including celebrities, have given their support to the station in a campaign to keep BBC 6 Music live.
A Facebook group campaigning to save BBC 6 Music has so far netted over 166,000 supporters.
