U2 guitarist The Edge has updated fans on the state of Bono’s injury, claiming that the singer was in “severe pain”.
With the band currently playing some of their biggest shows as part of their ‘360 Degree’ tour, Bono’s health recently grabbed the music headlines when the singer was rushed into surgery for an emergency operation on his back.
Suffering from extreme pain and now recovering from the injury, the operation has left U2 with no other choice but to cancel a number of shows on the current North American leg of their world tour.
Also, with U2 already confirmed to play a Friday night headline performance on the Pyramid stage, only yesterday it was announced that the Irish rock giants were also pulling out of this summer’s Glastonbury festival as well.
Today U2 guitarist The Edge posted a message to fans, giving more details on his front man’s health. “He was in a fairly intense programme to be ready for the tour, so something in that preparation…maybe he just overdid it and hurt himself maybe without realising it and it could have got worse,” he says.
The guitarist continued. “But luckily enough he did realise. I think he realised when he could no longer walk that actually he needed to go to the doctor and thank God he did because by the time they got to see him and do the scans they realised he had got some fairly major damage and had he not done anything about it, it could have been very serious and permanent.”
The Edge claims that even before Bono got checked out by the hospital, the singer was suffering from “severe pain” and “partial paralysis”.
Doctors have advised Bono that recovery could take some time with sixteen tour dates now postponed until the singer is back to full fitness. “We have to make sure that he does follow doctors’ orders because knowing him he will want to take short cuts and get ahead of himself,” The Edge explained.
