Gorgol Bordello's Eugene Hutz Reveals Previous Rage Against The Machine Performance

With only a few days left until Rage Against The Machine’s massive free concert in North London’s Finsbury Park, Gorgol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz has revealed that he previously played with the rap-metal rockers for an all-star rendition of the MC5’s classic track ‘Kick Out The Jams’.

The LA rap-metal giants announced the free concert following their victory of beating the ‘traditional’ UK Christmas Number One winner, usually taken by the annual X-Factor competition winner.

With the huge free show set to go ahead this Sunday 6th June, Hutz spoke to Spinner website of his experience with the band first time around. "I played at a benefit concert with them in LA for homeless people, Tom Morello texted me and asked if I wanted to play some acoustic songs. I did my acoustic set and I was drinking downstairs afterwards with other musicians when Tom came down and said, 'Do you know 'Kick Out the Jams' by the MC5?' And I said, 'Who doesn't, right?' so he said, 'Would you like to come up and play it with us?'"

Continuing, "So I came out on stage and it's (Motorhead's) Lemmy on bass, (ex-Guns N'Roses') Slash on guitar, Tom on guitar, the drummer from Slipknot and Wayne Kramer from MC5 on vocals as well as the rapper from Cypress Hill and we played 'Kick Out the Jams' and I thought, This is a truly surreal moment of life!"

As if the onstage thrill wasn’t enough for Hutz, drinking with the stars in the backstage bar was something special too.

Confirming the legendary reputation of one man in particular, Hutz explained, "Afterwards, Lemmy made me a drink and he said, 'Ah, you're alright! Have a drink!' and I took one sip and I decided to give it to someone else! I think it was a Long Island Ice Tea with a serious imbalance of ingredients!"
