The Scandinavians seem to love to float along a trippy cloud of flowing keys and chords, grabbing your hand and taking you to a slightly odd plateau of comfort. Swedish three-piece Miike Snow appear to relish this style of chilled beats that lean on a dancy influence. 2009’s ‘Black and Blue’ sat somewhere between Prince, MGMT and the Scissor Sisters, shooting dazzling darts of electro into your conscious.
New single The Rabbit runs and jumps into a falling hole of synthesisers and echoing vocals, losing itself in confusion and mystique. Lead singer Andrew Wyatt croons at times like a young Peter Gabriel, but is then quickly pulled back into the dizzying world of indie electro-pop. Wyatt’s lyrics are on the surface nonsensical at times, “I tried to beat the devil too many times, I’m in love and she is tragic magic”, but look closer drug abuse rears its head much like a rabbit from its hole.
Unfortunately the track fails to really sparkle or grip like the powerful synth beats suggest, meandering along without surprise and purpose. Set to feature on a special deluxe edition of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album, The Rabbit doesn’t really live up to the band’s potential and stronger collection of tracks. Want to experience the best of Miike Snow? Then check out 2009’s Animal or Black & Blue, and let this floppy eared shrug hop past your attention.
