BBC 6Music Saved From Closure

It has been announced that BBC’s 6Music radio station has been saved! Well done everyone who got involved! The campaigns, protests and marches must have made an impression with the BBC Trust, who have now decided to reject plans to close the station down.

Founded in 2002, BBC 6Music has since formed a huge loyal fanbase which reacted in horror when news was dropped earlier this year that the radio station was earmarked to be axed.

Playing a mix of new and alternative music, 6Music has picked up a variety of awards during its last 8 years along with a vast array of celebrities joining the digital station to broadcast their own shows.

However, due to cost-cutting plans sweeping through the corporation, BBC 6Music’s days were numbered with the station being threatened with closure to assist with the BBC’s budget cuts. In order for the station to be shut-down, a case was required to be brought forward to the BBC Trust by today, July 5th.

Sir Michael Lyons, BBC Trust Chairman, earlier confirmed that a case for the closure of 6Music had not been made. “As things stand, the case has not been made for the closure of 6 Music”, he explained.
T
he news was broken with assistance from presenter Lauren Laverne who revealed the good news via her Twitter account. “6Music has been saved. Hoooooooorrrrrayyyyyyyy!”

It hasn’t all been good news however, The Asian Network has been axed as part of the same cost-cutting strategy sweeping the BBC. The station has won many awards for its service to Britain’s Asian communities, with many supporters of the station arguing this with the BBC Trust. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough though and the station will close later this year.
