John Carpenter is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, editor and composer, from Los Angeles, California.
Regarded as a master of the low-budget horror film, his early films include 1978's Halloween, 1980's The Fog, 1981's Escape From New York, and 1984's Starman. Hugely influential as filmmaker, he has also helmed cult classics such as 1974's Dark Star, 1976's Assault On Precinct 13, 1982's The Thing, 1986's Big Trouble In Little China, 1988's They Live, and 1996's Escape From L.A. More recently, he returned to the Halloween franchise, composing the score and serving as executive producer on Halloween, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends between 2018 and 2022. As of 2016, Carpenter has been more focused on composing than filmmaking, and has released five studio albums of compositions that echo the sinister tones of his film work, the latest being 2024's 'Lost Themes IV: Noir'. John Carpenter has announced his first music residency at The Belasco in Los Angeles, California, where he'll perform alongside bandmates Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies in fall 2025.
