The original Buena Vista Social Club was a members' club in Havana, Cuba, that closed in the 1940s. In 1996 it inspired a record by Juan de Marcos González, a Cuban musician, and Ry Cooder, an American guitarist, and traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom had performed at the club. The record, ‘Buena Vista Social Club’, became an international success, with some of the performers releasing solo albums, and collaborations with famous artists from different musical genres, and the name became a generic term to describe these performances and releases, as well as Cuba’s music between the 1930’s and 1950’s.
Many of the initial lineup have since died, but trumpeter, Manuel ‘Guajiro’ Mirabal, laúd player, Barbarito Torres, and trombonist and conductor Jesus "Aguaje" Ramos, along with new members, singer, Carlos Calunga, virtuoso pianist, Rolando Luna, and occasionally the solo singer, Omara Portuondo, as part of a 13-member band, tour worldwide as Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. You can catch the band play their final show in the UK at London’s O2 Arena, in April 2016. Catch them live by checking out the tour dates and ticket information on Stereoboard below.
