Beastie Boys were an American rap group from New York City, who formed in 1979. The group comprised Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar).
The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the United States and 50 million records worldwide, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004, the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album 'Licensed to Ill'. It was followed by 'Paul's Boutique', 'Check Your Head', 'Ill Communication' and 'Hello Nasty', and their latest 'Hot Sauce Committee Part Two' in 2011. In 2018 Beastie Boys will release an book, Live And Direct, which will cover the band’s transition from teenage punks to budding rapper, their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album, its messy fallout, their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece 'Paul’s Boutique'. Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz will launch the book with a collection of shows around the US and London. The events will feature a special guest moderator at each stop along with feature readings, a Q&A and a live score provided by the group’s longtime DJ Mixmaster Mike.
