Black Star is a hip hop duo featuring Mos Def and Talib Kweli.
Formed in 1997, the group named themselves after the political vision of Marcus Garvey, founder of the united Negro Improvement Association and creator of the Black Star Shipping Line, designed to repatriate people to Africa. The group are part of the Native Tongues Crew, a collective containing A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, the Jungle Brothers, the Bush Babies and Common. Black Star released their debut album, ‘Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star’, in 1998. Black Star will return for a London show this autumn as part of the city's Innervisions Festival.
